It Works, It Really Does

2010

She is 26. She grins when I tell her how much I enjoyed a certain performance. It was spectacular, an intoxicating explosion of rhythm, and song, and dance and drama, and even more drama, which had me jumping out of my chair and exclaiming: bravo! Bravo!

She nods and simultaneously shrugs her one shoulder.

“You didn’t like it?” I ask. The question isn’t even necessary.

She apologizes, “the problem is, I just know too much. You see?”

This time I nod. Of course she knows too much. She sees right through effect. It’s her job to. This is what she does. This is her profession.

“But it works,” I say.

“It was kitsch,” she concludes.

Kitsch.

I somehow think of the attached music. I don’t know why, but this is what I think of. We have all heard this specific piece of music before, somewhere, sometime. In a film or for an ad. Most of us don’t even know what it is exactly.

I also can’t help but think of a certain line. It comes from the story that inspired the music.

“Were I but a glove upon that hand that I may kiss that cheek.”

And it works. It really does.
